Eat Right and Lower Your Cholesterol Effortlessly

I like to eat. Do you like to eat? I also like to read about what I eat. If you saw me eating, you would have seen me reading... reading labels, and reading boxes of cereal. Have you ever taken a look at the contents of the yummy food you eat? Its unbelievable what we allow to enter our bodies. And so, as I am not young any more, I've learned a lot about products, ingredients, fats and sugars, as well as about companies that sell all of this food to us.

The following isnt an in-depth research, but rather a mixed bag of facts, myths and what I've read over the years, sitting in my favorite fast food restaurants:

  • In 1970, we as Americans spent $6 billion on food. A couple decades later, in 2001 -- over $110 billion.  This is more than what we spent on buying books, magazines, newspapers, movies, videos and music - all together. Surprisingly, its even more than what we spent on cars, computers and colleges.
  • Every week the average fellow American eats 3 hamburgers and 4 intakes of chips.
  • As you can imagine, the fast food industry is the largest consumer of pork, beef, chicken and potato.
  • Believe it or not, in the last 20 years we have modified chicken to have huge breasts. Chickens are now being sold in pieces.
  • Every 8th worker in US has worked at McDonalds, at one time or another, during his lifetime.
  • 2/3 of fast food workers are teens. They work for minimum wage, with work process consisting of series of basic simple operations. They follow instructions, describing in detail the order in which fast food is being processed, and how to deal with customers.
  • Labor turnover in fast food industry is the highest of all. A typical worker stays at his job for less than 4 months. A lot of them don't know much English outside vocabulary used at work.
  • Low pay gets compensated by creating team spirit, and managers are taught how to be effective in encouraging young workers to give their best.
  • Teen workers like to have fun at work. Video surveillance at work shows that they sneeze on food, lick their fingers, pick their nose or teeth, and drop food on the floor. In May of 2000 three teenagers from one of the fast-food restaurants in New York were charged for spitting and urinating in customers' food during previous 8 months. No wonder they preferred not to eat in their own restaurant.
  • We all like the taste of French fries. Did you know the taste if fries no longer depends on what kind of fat was used to cook them? For decades it was a mix of 93% beef fat and 7% cotton-seed oil. Since the time we launched the war on obesity and in efforts to lower cholesterol, it became 100% vegetable oil. So, how come the taste didn't change that much? Well, I suspect that whatever they meant by "natural aromatizers" makes it taste good! This is my explanation why all this food tastes so delicious. (Didn't I mention I'm sitting in my favorite fast food restaurant? :-)
  • Recipes of my favorite chips and burgers can't be found in popular culinary books. To research what I eat I had to read Food Engineering books and manuals. In fact, what we eat now, has changed much more dramatically in the last few decades than in the last few millenniums. The tastes and smells are no longer being produced on farms and fields, but get manufactured on chemical factories in New Jersey.
  • About 90% of all the food we buy was subjected to some pre-processing. Freezing and conservants kill most of natural taste in food. We no longer can live without freezing our food.
